What is Galvanized Wire?

Galvanized wire is steel wire coated with a layer of zinc that acts as a protective barrier against oxidation and corrosion. This coating makes the final product suitable for industrial, agricultural, construction, and wire-related manufacturing applications.

Traditional Wire Galvanizing Process

The traditional galvanizing process combines several consecutive phases that must work in sync to guarantee the quality of the galvanized wire. Each stage directly influences the final finish, zinc adhesion, corrosion resistance, and line efficiency.

Wire winding
The process begins with the winding of the wire, which arrives at the line from a previous wire drawing process. To continuously feed it into the installation, winders adapted to the wire supply format are used.
Heat treatment using an annealing furnace for wire
The wire passes through an annealing furnace at approximately 780°C, fueled by natural gas or LPG. In this phase, recrystallization occurs, a process by which the wire recovers its mechanical properties: ductility and tensile strength.
Chemical pickling of wire
After cooling, the wire passes through 12% hydrochloric acid tanks to remove any remaining carbonized lubricant. It is then rinsed with water and dried using air blow nozzles.

Chemical pickling of metals is key to properly preparing the surface before galvanizing.
Wire draining
After the zinc bath, the wire passes through a draining system to remove excess material and leave the necessary coating.

Draining can be done using two systems:
• Pad wipe: uses fiber pads and leaves a thin layer of zinc, suitable for general use.
• Jet wipe: uses nitrogen through nozzles, leaving a greater amount of zinc and offering more protection against corrosion.
Final roll
Finally, the wire is wound onto coils, reels, or rolls of galvanized wire using static or dynamic wire winders, depending on the wire diameter and the line speed.

The end result is a coil of galvanized and annealed wire, ready for industrial use or commercialization.
